Williams Creek Management is responsible for the long-term maintenance and preservation of Rialto Marsh, a 40-acre wetland mitigation site along Mill Creek in Cincinnati. Created by The Nature Conservancy as part of an in-lieu fee mitigation program, the project is designed to restore wetland function, enhance biodiversity, and meet regulatory requirements for wetland mitigation credits.
A key focus of the project is ensuring the site achieves and maintains 90% native plant cover by the end of the 10-year maintenance period, a requirement for preserving its mitigation credit value. Williams Creek has played a critical role in monitoring, managing, and restoring native vegetation, particularly by controlling invasive species such as honeysuckle and Callery pear, which threaten to outcompete native wetland plants.
The site requires careful management due to periodic flooding, which can introduce additional invasive plant material, and limited access caused by transmission lines running through the area. To maintain the wetland’s health, Williams Creek implements ongoing treatment, replanting, and adaptive management strategies, ensuring it remains a functioning, self-sustaining ecosystem.
This project highlights the long-term commitment needed for successful wetland mitigation, requiring ongoing monitoring, restoration, and proactive management. Williams Creek’s efforts at Rialto Marsh support regional wetland conservation, enhancing stormwater filtration, habitat restoration, and water quality in the Mill Creek watershed.
