Buckeye Lake is one of several reservoirs in Ohio that suffers from severe degradation in water quality. The 3,173 acre lake is operated by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Parks and Recreation and is home to Ohio’s oldest state park and residential development along most of the lake’s shoreline. Williams Creek Management installed rain gardens between the beach and parking lot area at the Park’s Crystal Beach swimming area and bioswales near the parking lot area. Williams Creek also completed a parking lot retrofit at the Fairfield Boat Ramp Parking Area with installation of a bioswale and permeable pavers to collect and pre-treat stormwater runoff prior to discharge to a constructed wetland facility.
Williams Creek provided survey, design, native landscape installation, and construction oversight services. McDaniel’s Construction provided traditional paving services for the project. Finally, Williams Creek wrote a detailed Operations and Maintenance Manual for the Ohio DNR staff that is maintaining these Green Infrastructure projects. The manual included inspection and maintenance checklists and schedules for each Best Management Practice, as well as photos of invasive species and a species list that may be found within the vegetated areas.
